DV vs OV vs EV — how much identity you prove
Every certificate gives the same strong encryption. They differ in how much of your identity is verified — and therefore how much trust visitors place in your site.
Domain Validation (DV)
Proves you control the domain and issues within minutes. The fastest, most affordable route to HTTPS — ideal for blogs, portfolios and small sites. Products: EssentialSSL, Positive SSL.
Organization Validation (OV)
Verifies your registered company and puts your organisation’s name inside the certificate, so visitors see a real business behind the site. Best for company and e-commerce sites. Products: InstantSSL, InstantSSL Pro.
Extended Validation (EV)
The strictest vetting — legal, physical and operational checks of your business — for the highest level of visitor assurance. Suited to banks, large e-commerce and regulated industries.
Standard, Wildcard or Multi-domain
Pick coverage by how many hostnames you need to secure on one certificate.
Standard (single domain)
Secures one hostname such as www.example.com. The right choice for a single website.
Wildcard
Secures a domain plus unlimited first-level subdomains (shop.example.com, mail.example.com…) on one certificate. Great when you run many subdomains.
Multi-domain / UCC
Secures several completely different domains or hostnames on a single certificate — perfect for multiple sites or Microsoft Exchange.
Which SSL certificate should you buy?
Match the certificate to what your site does. Use this quick guide, or contact our team and we’ll recommend the right one for you.
- Blog, portfolio or landing page → Domain Validation (EssentialSSL / Positive SSL).
- Business or e-commerce site collecting logins, forms or payments → Organization Validation (InstantSSL / InstantSSL Pro).
- Bank, large e-commerce, government or regulated brand → Extended Validation (EV).
- One website → Standard single-domain. Many subdomains → Wildcard. Several separate domains → Multi-domain / UCC.
- Distributing software → Code Signing. Securing email → Email (S/MIME) — neither secures a website.
- Still unsure? Start with a DV certificate today and upgrade later as you grow.
More than a padlock — trust, security and SEO
Encryption & trust
Protects passwords, card details and forms in transit and shows the padlock, so visitors trust your site with their data.
Better SEO rankings
HTTPS has been a confirmed Google ranking signal since 2014. Secure sites are favoured, while HTTP is flagged “Not secure” — hurting rankings and engagement.
No “Not secure” warning
Chrome, Safari and Edge mark plain HTTP pages as “Not secure”, driving visitors away. SSL removes the warning and lifts conversions.
Faster, modern site
HTTPS unlocks HTTP/2 and modern performance features, so a secured site can also load faster — another ranking factor.
Payments & compliance
Collecting payments or sensitive data effectively requires SSL and helps you meet PCI-DSS and data-protection expectations.
Warranty backing
Paid certificates carry a Sectigo warranty that protects your visitors against loss from mis-issuance — assurance a free certificate can’t offer.
